Pericnik Waterfall

Pericnik falls in two stages in the Vrata valley, the glacial trench that runs up to the north face of Triglav, and the lower stage is the one people come for: it drops about fifty-two metres over an overhang, and a narrow ledge path runs along the rock behind the falling water so that the valley is seen through the curtain. The upper fall of some sixteen metres is reached separately. Spray covers the ledge and the rock stays wet all year.

When to go

May to October is the reliable season, with the strongest flow after snowmelt in May and June. Winter turns it into an ice column climbed by ice climbers, and the path behind it is then dangerous. Autumn rain also raises the flow.

Honest expectations

The ledge behind the waterfall is wet, slippery and unprotected, and it is genuinely risky in wet weather; falling ice makes it dangerous in winter and spring. The car park is small and fills by mid-morning in summer. Spray soaks cameras.
