Lake Bohinj, deeper in the Julian Alps than its famous neighbour Bled, is larger, wilder and far quieter, a glacial lake of clear water ringed by forested mountains at the heart of Triglav National Park. A place for swimming, kayaking and walking rather than crowds, it is the gateway to the high Alps and the beautiful Savica waterfall.

When to go
Late spring to early autumn for swimming, boating and walking; it is quieter than Bled in any season. The cable car opens the high country in summer and skiing in winter.
Honest expectations
It is wilder and less developed than Bled, which is the appeal for those wanting nature over the postcard. Facilities are fewer. The high trails from here are real alpine hikes needing care.
