Pokljuka Plateau

Pokljuka is a limestone plateau at around twelve hundred metres, covered in spruce forest and pocked with dolines, sitting between Bled and the Triglav massif. Two things distinguish it: the raised peat bogs, rare at this latitude and altitude and protected, with sundew and cotton grass growing on them, and the planina meadows where cattle are still summered in wooden herders' huts. In winter it becomes a cross-country and biathlon centre and has held World Cup rounds.

• The raised bogs - protected peat bogs with sundew, cotton grass and boardwalk access.
• The planina meadows - summer herding pastures with working wooden huts.
• The spruce forest - dense high plateau forest over limestone dolines.
• The biathlon stadium - the Rudno Polje centre used for World Cup rounds.

When to go

June to September for walking and the herders' huts, which are occupied only in summer. December to March for cross-country skiing on the trail network. Fog sits on the plateau often in autumn.

Honest expectations

The plateau is flat and forested and the views out are limited except from its edges; anyone wanting alpine scenery should climb off it. The bogs are small and fragile and stepping off the boardwalk damages them. The road up is narrow.
