Ljubljana is one of the most relaxed and charming little capitals in Europe, a green, car-free city centre of baroque and art nouveau facades along the willow-lined Ljubljanica river, watched over by a castle on the hill. Its bridges and public spaces, shaped by the visionary architect Joze Plecnik and now UNESCO-listed, give it a distinctive, human grace.

What you actually see

  • The Triple Bridge and Plecnik's works - the architect's bridges, market and river spaces.
  • The riverside cafes - the lively willow-lined embankments.
  • Ljubljana Castle - the hilltop castle reached by funicular, with a city view.
  • The Dragon Bridge - the art nouveau bridge guarded by dragons, the city's symbol.

When to go

Spring to autumn for the riverside cafes and terraces; December for a lovely Christmas market. The car-free centre is a pleasure to stroll in any mild weather.

Honest expectations

It is small and easy-going, a day rather than a long stay, and its charm is the atmosphere and Plecnik's touches rather than blockbuster sights. It has grown more popular but stays relaxed. The castle funicular and some sights charge.

Nearby

Lake Bled and the caves are within an hour; the Karst and coast lie south-west.
