Jamnik Church

The church of St Primož and Felicijan sits alone on a grassy hump above the hamlet of Jamnik, with the Kamnik-Savinja Alps standing along the horizon behind it, and the combination has made it one of the images that stands for Slovenia. It is a plain Gothic building of the fifteenth century, usually locked. The view works best when autumn fog fills the Sava basin below and the church stands above the cloud, which is when photographers gather before dawn.

What to look for

• The knoll setting - a small church alone on a grass hump with the Alps behind.
• The autumn inversions - fog filling the valley below and the church standing clear.
• The Gothic shell - a plain fifteenth-century building, usually locked.
• The Kamnik-Savinja skyline - the mountain wall forming the backdrop.

When to go

Autumn mornings with valley fog are the classic conditions and draw a crowd before sunrise. Spring and summer give clearer but flatter views. Winter snow is good but the access road can be difficult.

Before you go

The church is almost always locked and there is nothing to see inside. The access road is narrow with very little parking, and on good autumn mornings photographers fill it. There are no facilities at all.
