Getting thereAt Telgart, about 70 km east of Banska Bystrica below Kralova Hola
EntryFree; rail fares to ride it

The line from Banská Bystrica to Margecany had to climb out of the Hron valley at Telgárt, and the engineers solved it with a spiral: the track curves through a full circle, passing through a tunnel and back over itself on a stone viaduct, gaining height in a small space. It was built in the 1930s and is one of very few such loops in Central Europe. It can be photographed from the road above or ridden on the ordinary service.

What you actually see

  • The spiral - the line curving through a full circle and crossing over itself.
  • The stone viaduct - the arched bridge carrying the upper track.
  • The tunnel - the bore the line passes through inside the loop.
  • The Kralova Hola backdrop - the Low Tatras rising above the valley.

When to go

May to October is the best for photography and walking to the viewpoint. Trains run year round on the ordinary timetable. Autumn colour in the valley is good.

Honest expectations

It is a working line with a few services a day, not a heritage operation. The viewpoint is a walk up from the village and unmarked. There are no facilities.

Nearby

Kralova Hola rises above, and Cierny Balog is west.
