Vinča

Belo Brdo at Vinča is a tell, a settlement mound built up by continuous occupation, excavated from 1908 by Miloje Vasić and found to contain nine metres of stratified deposits covering roughly 5700 to 4500 BC. The culture named after it spread across a large part of the central Balkans and is known for fine dark burnished pottery, remarkable figurines with angular masked faces, early copper metallurgy, and incised signs on pots that some researchers have argued are a proto-writing system, a claim that remains contested. The site itself is an excavation area with a visitor centre and reconstructions; the best finds are in the National Museum in Belgrade. Guided visits explain the stratigraphy, which is the point, since the mound reads as layered earth to an untrained eye.

When to go

April to October; the site is outdoors and muddy after rain. Guided tours run at set times and are worth timing for, since unguided the mound means little. Winter hours are reduced.

Practical notes

There is not much to look at without a guide: the mound is earth in section rather than standing architecture. The major finds are in Belgrade, not here. Facilities are modest. Public transport from the city is slow.
