Mediana was a luxurious suburban estate of the fourth century associated with Constantine, who was born at Naissus and returned to it, and excavation has uncovered a villa with peristyle, granaries, baths, a water tower and a large area of mosaic flooring with geometric patterns and figures including a well-known head of Medusa. The central mosaics are protected under a modern shelter with raised walkways, which is how most of the site is seen; the rest is foundations in open ground. Finds and reconstructions are shown in a small display. It is a short trip from central Niš and takes an hour or two, and it gives the imperial context that the fortress in town, being Ottoman, does not.

What you actually see

  • Mosaic floors - geometric and figural panels under the shelter.
  • The villa foundations - peristyle, baths and granary outlines.
  • The Medusa head - the best-known figure in the mosaic scheme.
  • The site display - finds and reconstruction of the estate.

When to go

April to October; the covered section works in any weather but the open ground is exposed. The site closes on Mondays and has shorter winter hours. Mornings are quieter.

Honest expectations

Beyond the covered mosaics there is little standing and the open areas read as foundations. Interpretation in English is limited. The setting beside a main road is not attractive. The visit is short and best combined with the city.

Nearby

Niš lies west; Sićevo gorge is further east.
