Oussouye

Oussouye is the seat of a Diola kingship that has continued into the present: the king, chosen by the elders and installed through a long ritual process, holds religious and mediating authority rather than administrative power, and the sacred forest around the town is central to it. The role has been documented since the colonial period and the current holder was installed in 2000. The town, of about 5,700 people in 2023, where the Jola language Kasa is spoken, sits in the wettest, greenest part of Senegal, among rice paddies and palm forest.

• The Humebeul festival - the royal ceremony that draws the region when it is held.

When to go

November to May is the dry season and the easiest for travel. The royal ceremonies follow their own calendar and are announced locally. The rains from June turn the region green and the rice fields into water.

Practical notes

The sacred forest is closed and the kingship is a living institution, not a display; photographing the king or ceremonies is done only with explicit permission. There is very little tourist infrastructure. Village visits should go through people the communities work with.
