Valle de Bravo

Valle de Bravo was a quiet highland town until the 1947 dam flooded its valley - and the resulting lake, wrapped in pine mountains at 1,800 metres, turned it into the capital's most polished weekend escape. The old town survives beautifully above the water: steep cobbled lanes of whitewashed walls, clay roofs and carved wood balconies converging on a plaza where the parish church faces cafe arcades. The waterfront below runs to sailing clubs, yacht moorings and the promenade of La Peña ridge, while the sky above stays busy - Valle is one of the world's celebrated paragliding sites, its reliable thermals hosting international competitions, with tandem flights lifting tourists from El Peñon to circle over lake and forest. Mountain bikers, wakeboarders and hikers fill the margins; the Velo de Novia waterfall and the Carmel Maranatha monastery gardens make the classic excursions. From December to February, monarch butterflies winter in the firs at nearby Piedra Herrada, adding orange blizzards to the repertoire.

When to go

November to April for dry skies and prime flying; December to February adds the monarchs. Weekends bring the full social scene - and the traffic; midweek is half-price serenity.

Honest expectations

Valle is upscale by Mexican town standards - weekend hotel and restaurant prices reflect the capital clientele. Saturday arrival traffic can crawl. The lake is for boats more than swimming.
