Getting thereOn the east coast road south of São Tomé town; road access
EntryFree; guide expected

Água Izé was among the first estates on São Tomé to plant cocoa on a large scale, established in the 1850s, and it grew into a complex with a hospital, a chapel, warehouses, a narrow gauge railway and quarters for a workforce brought under contract from the Portuguese African territories. UNESCO inscribed it in 2026 as one of six roças making up a property about the colonial plantation system and forced migration.

What you actually see

  • The estate complex - hospital, chapel, warehouses and quarters together.
  • The early cocoa planting - one of the first large-scale plantings on the island.
  • The railway remains - the narrow gauge line that served the estate.
  • The 2026 inscription - one of six roças in the UNESCO property.

When to go

June to September is the drier gravana season. The estate is lived in and accessible at any time. Rain makes the ground difficult.

Honest expectations

Families live in the buildings and this is not a museum; a guide and permission matter. Structures are unsafe in places. Inscription is recent and interpretation on the ground is minimal.

Nearby

São Tomé town is north, and São João dos Angolares is south.
