Roça Monte Café

Monte Café sits high in the interior where the altitude suits coffee rather than cocoa, and the estate there worked arabica from the nineteenth century with the drying terraces, the processing machinery and the workers' quarters laid out down the slope. A small coffee museum operates in one of the buildings and the machinery is still in place. UNESCO inscribed it in 2026 as one of six roças forming a single property.

June to September is the drier gravana season. The highlands are cooler and wetter than the coast year round. The museum keeps informal hours.

The museum's hours are informal and it is sometimes shut. Buildings are decaying and unsafe in places. Families live on the estate and permission matters.
