Papapapai-tai Falls

Papapapai-tai drops around a hundred metres into a steep forested gorge on the southern side of Upolu's central ridge, and it is seen from a viewpoint beside the Cross Island Road rather than from below, since there is no path down into the gorge. The fall is thin, the gorge is deep and green, and cloud coming over the ridge frequently obscures the whole thing within minutes of arriving.

What you actually see

• The single thin drop - around a hundred metres into the gorge below.
• The forested gorge - the steep green valley the fall lands in.
• The roadside viewpoint - the only vantage, with no path down.
• The ridge weather - cloud coming over the crest and closing the view.

When to go

May to October is the drier season with better visibility. The wet season from November brings more water but more cloud. Mornings are clearest.

Honest expectations

Cloud closes the view very often and there is no way to get closer. The viewpoint is a lay-by with no facilities. Ten minutes covers it.

Apia is north over the ridge, and the Baha'i temple is on the same road.
