John Williams Monument

A monument at Sapapali'i on the east coast of Savai'i marks the point where John Williams of the London Missionary Society came ashore in 1830 with Tahitian teachers, an event that began the conversion of Samoa to Christianity within a generation and reshaped the country's institutions, calendar and architecture. A church stands beside it. Williams was killed on Erromango in Vanuatu nine years later. Sapapali'i was the seat of Malietoa Vainu'upo, whose acceptance of the mission is what made the landing consequential rather than simply the arrival of a ship.

What to look for

• The monument - the memorial marking the 1830 landing point.
• The church beside it - the building on the site at Sapapali'i.
• The coast - the shore the mission party came ashore on.
• The Tahitian teachers - the party who did much of the actual work of conversion.

When to go

Year round; the site is beside the road and open at all times. Sundays are strictly observed in the village. Half an hour covers it.

Things to know

It is a monument beside a road with a plaque and little else. Interpretation is minimal. Sunday observance means visiting during services is not appropriate.
