Ie Samoa Fine Mat

The 'ie Samoa is a mat woven from pandanus stripped to threads a millimetre or two wide, so fine that a single mat can take a woman months or years and the result is soft enough to fold like cloth. Mats are not decoration: they are exchanged at weddings, funerals and title bestowals as the highest form of wealth, and each carries a name and a history. UNESCO inscribed the practice on its Representative List in 2019.

Things to know

There is no museum or centre where this can simply be seen; visits must be arranged through villages or cultural organisations. Fine mats are not generally for sale and what is sold to visitors is a coarser product. The practice is genuinely declining, which is part of why it was listed.
