Black Point Heritage and Recreation Park

At Black Point on the windward coast a tunnel around a hundred metres long was cut through a headland of solid rock in 1815, by enslaved and Carib labourers working with hand tools, so that sugar could be moved by cart from the estates north of it to the shipping point beyond. It is the main surviving piece of engineering from that period on the island. A black sand beach and picnic ground occupy the site around it.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. The tunnel is open during park hours. The windward sea is rough at any season.

Before you go

The tunnel is dark and wet with uneven footing. The beach has strong surf and swimming is dangerous. Facilities depend on the park being staffed that day.
