Yelabuga Old Town

Yelabuga kept its merchant town centre largely as it was: a low grid of two-storey brick houses with shopfronts, churches and a trading arcade, laid out in the nineteenth century and not much rebuilt since, which is rarer than it sounds. On the hill above the river stands the Devil's Tower, the one surviving round tower of a tenth-century Volga Bulgar fortress, reconstructed in the nineteenth century and now the town's emblem. The museums are the other draw and they are unusually specific: Ivan Shishkin, the landscape painter of Russian forests, was born here and his family house is preserved; Nadezhda Durova, who served in the cavalry in the Napoleonic wars disguised as a man and later published a memoir, lived and is buried here; and Marina Tsvetaeva died here in August 1941, in a house that is now a museum, after evacuation from Moscow. That last is a hard visit and presented plainly.

• The intact grid - a nineteenth-century merchant centre that was not rebuilt.
• The Devil's Tower - the surviving round tower of a Volga Bulgar fortress above the river.
• The Shishkin house - the family home of the landscape painter, preserved as a museum.
• The Tsvetaeva house - where the poet died in August 1941, now a museum.

When to go

May to September. Half a day for the centre and the tower, a full day with the museums.

Honest expectations

Museums keep short hours and some close on Mondays and the last day of the month. Labelling is mostly Russian. The Tsvetaeva house is a small and sombre site, not a general attraction. The tower is a nineteenth-century reconstruction, not intact medieval fabric.
