Bolgar Ancient Settlement

The Volga Bulgars ran a trading state on the middle Volga from the tenth century, and in 922 their ruler received an embassy from Baghdad and adopted Islam - the event that makes this the reference point for Islam's arrival in the region, and the reason Tatar pilgrimage comes here. Ibn Fadlan, who travelled with that embassy, left an account of the journey which is one of the few outside descriptions of the peoples of the Volga at the time. The city was destroyed by the Mongols, rebuilt under the Golden Horde, and abandoned by the fifteenth century. What remains is spread across open meadow above the river: the ruined cathedral mosque with its minaret, the Black Chamber, several mausoleums, bath foundations, earth ramparts, and a much later Orthodox church built into the site. New buildings from the 2010s programme - a white mosque, a museum, a Quran pavilion - stand alongside, and are modern, not historical.

When to go

May to September; river boats from Kazan in summer. Half a day. The meadow is exposed with little shade.

Honest expectations

The medieval remains are fragmentary, spread out and require walking in the open. Several prominent buildings on site are new construction from the 2010s, not antiquities, and the difference is not always signposted. It is a pilgrimage site and can be busy on religious dates.
