Bolgar Ancient Settlement

The Volga Bulgars ran a trading state on the middle Volga from the tenth century, and in 922 their ruler received an embassy from Baghdad and adopted Islam - the event that makes this the reference point for Islam's arrival in the region, and the reason Tatar pilgrimage comes here. Ibn Fadlan, who travelled with that embassy, left an account of the journey which is one of the few outside descriptions of the peoples of the Volga at the time. The city was destroyed by the Mongols, rebuilt under the Golden Horde, declined from the late fourteenth century and lasted as a Muslim religious centre until the mid-sixteenth. What remains is spread across open meadow above the river: the ruined cathedral mosque with its minaret, the Black Chamber, several mausoleums, bath foundations, earth ramparts, and a much later Orthodox church built into the site. New buildings from the 2010s programme - a white mosque, a museum, a Quran pavilion - stand alongside, and are modern, not historical.

History

Bolgar was founded in the 10th century and was, by turns with Bilyar and Nur-Suvar, the capital of Volga Bulgaria from the 10th to the 13th century, its khagans moving their seat to Bilyar at times under Russian raids along the Volga and internal strife. In the autumn of 1236 the Mongols sacked it, and a Russian chronicler wrote that they killed everyone from the old to the youngest child, looted it and set it on fire; under the Golden Horde the taxes of Bolgar and other lands filled the Horde's treasury, and the Mongols replaced its rulers with their own. Bulat-Timur sacked it in 1361, Muscovy and Nizhny Novgorod-Suzdal briefly held it in 1376, and it lasted as a Muslim religious centre until Ivan IV conquered the Khanate of Kazan in the mid-16th century; in Soviet times Muslims who could not make the hajj to Mecca came here on the Little Hajj, and in 2014 the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex became a World Heritage Site (Wikipedia, Bolghar).

May to September; river boats from Kazan in summer. Half a day. The meadow is exposed with little shade.

Good to know

The medieval remains are fragmentary, spread out and require walking in the open. Several prominent buildings on site are new construction from the 2010s, not antiquities, and the difference is not always signposted. It is a pilgrimage site and can be busy on religious dates.
