Comitan

Comitan de Dominguez carries itself differently from the highland towns north of it - less wool and incense, more filigree and marimba. The plaza announces the style: tiered gardens and clipped laurels under the white church of Santo Domingo, ringed by neoclassical and art nouveau facades in cream and ochre, with an iron kiosk where marimba ensembles play most evenings to families promenading with esquites. The town gave Mexico Belisario Dominguez - the senator whose museum-house honors his fatal 1913 stand for free speech - and Rosario Castellanos, the state's great writer; their memory anchors a self-assured cultural life of galleries, a fine archaeological museum of Maya pieces from nearby Tenam Puente and Chinkultic, and the Iglesia de San Caralampio's folk-baroque color. Comiteco - the local agave spirit aged toward butterscotch smoothness - and a distinctive kitchen of butifarra sausage and pan compuesto give the arcades their menu. Most travelers use Comitan as the base for Montebello and El Chiflon; the town quietly makes the case for a day of its own.
