Lagunas de Montebello

Chiapas's first national park spreads nearly sixty lakes through the pine-and-oak highlands where Chiapas leans on Guatemala - and no two lagoons agree on a color. Mineral content, depth, algae and the day's own light tune each basin differently: Esmeralda and Agua Tinta go bottle-green, Encantada near-black, Bosque Azul a painterly blue under its cliffs, while the big border lakes - Tziscao, with its lakeside village and cabins, and Montebello itself - run turquoise sheets toward Guatemalan hills. The classic circuit drives the park road between miradors, then goes local: balsa rafts of lashed logs poled across Laguna Pojoj to an orchid island, kayaks and horses at Tziscao, and the Cinco Lagunas viewpoint stacking five colors in one frame. Side attractions add the Grutas San Rafael del Arco's river arch and, in season, orchids by the hundred species. Cool mountain air - the park sits near 1,500 metres - makes the walking generous; comedores at Bosque Azul and Tziscao keep the day fed on quesadillas and lake views.

When to go

December to May for the saturated palette under clear skies; mornings before cloud flatten the colors. The wet season greens the forest and greys the lakes.

Honest expectations

Distances inside the park are real - a car or arranged tour beats improvisation. Local guide cooperatives expect hiring at certain lakes; agree prices first. Swimming is allowed only at designated lagoons and cold regardless.
