Laguna Miramar
The jewel of the Lacandon - a remote jungle lake of absolute clarity reached by community arrangement, canoe camps and howler-monkey dawns.

Laguna Miramar is the reward at the end of everything: the largest lake in the Lacandon rainforest and among the purest in Mexico, a 16-square-kilometre basin of glass-clear water ringed entirely by primary jungle inside the Montes Azules biosphere - no road touches its shore, no building breaks the treeline. Access runs through the Tzeltal ejido of San Quintin, whose community tourism arrangement is the only door: after the long rough haul from Ocosingo, village guides walk visitors the final hour-plus to palm-thatch lake camps, then the lake takes over - dugout canoes across water so transparent the boats appear to levitate, swims from limestone shelves, paddles to islets where petroglyphs and small ruins hide in the vegetation, and caves in the karst shores. Crocodiles keep to their marked zones and the guides know them. Nights are hammocks, fireflies and a jungle mixing howler roars into the dark; dawns belong to macaws. It demands effort, cash in small bills and flexibility - and it repays with the rarest currency: a great lake still entirely wild.
What you actually see
- The clarity - canoes floating on invisible water.
- The jungle ring - primary rainforest to every horizon.
- The islets - petroglyphs and ruins in the green.
- The camps - hammock nights under howler soundtracks.
When to go
February to May for the driest roads and trails; rain months can make access genuinely hard. Arrange through the ejido's tourism contacts before traveling.
Honest expectations
This is expedition travel: long rough transport, basic camps, no signal, everything by community arrangement and cash. Swim where guides indicate - crocodile zoning is real. The effort is the filter; that is why it looks as it does.
Nearby
The Lacandon communities and Las Guacamayas macaw lodge serve the same deep-forest circuit for those continuing.
