Bonampak

One small building rewrote everything scholars believed about the Maya. Bonampak's Temple of the Murals - three modest rooms on an acropolis terrace - preserves wall paintings of around 790 AD in completeness nothing else in the ancient Americas approaches: Room 1's court pageant of lords in quetzal-plume headdresses, musicians with rattles and trumpets, and the presentation of an heir; Room 2's battle - a swirling, unromantic melee that ended the myth of the peaceful Maya - and its aftermath of captives on the stairs, blood dripping from torn fingernails before king Chan Muwan; Room 3's victory dances and royal bloodletting. The colors - Maya blue, ochres, deep reds - survive with startling force, painted by masters whose line work bears comparison to any tradition. Visits enter the rooms in small rotations under the Lacandon community's watch, whose forest village of Lacanja controls final access and guides the site. The acropolis stair, carved stelae and the sculpted lintels overhead frame the pilgrimage; the jungle - macaws included - provides the soundtrack.

When to go

Dry-season mornings for road and light; most visitors pair it with Yaxchilan on the classic long day from Palenque. Early arrival shortens mural-room rotations.

Honest expectations

Rooms are small, dim and time-limited - binoculars or a fast eye help; photography rules vary and flash is always banned. The final kilometres run on community transport at community pace. Humidity is total.
