Yaxchilan

No road reaches Yaxchilan. The city sits inside a horseshoe bend of the Usumacinta - the great river frontier with Guatemala - and visitors arrive as the ancients did, by water: lanchas run forty minutes downstream from Frontera Corozal between jungle walls, crocodiles on the bars, until the stone stair rises from the bank. The city that awaits was a Classic superpower, rival to Piedras Negras downstream, and its glory is carved: Yaxchilan's lintels - the sculpted door beams of its temples - are the finest narrative reliefs in the Maya world, showing king Shield Jaguar and his queen Lady Xook in ceremonies unflinchingly specific, from the famous vision-serpent bloodletting to accession pageantry (several masterpieces reside abroad, but superb lintels remain in place). The setting completes it: the Labyrinth's bat-flown passages open onto the Grand Plaza, howler monkeys roar from the canopy like weather, and Structure 33 - the crested temple of Bird Jaguar - crowns a jungle stairway. With Bonampak's murals nearby, it forms Mexico's deepest ruin day.

When to go

Dry-season mornings - boats run best, trails dry, howlers loudest. Combined Bonampak-Yaxchilan tours from Palenque leave before dawn; the length is the price.

The day is long and hot with real walking - this is expedition sightseeing. River levels and border-zone logistics occasionally adjust plans; go with established operators. Facilities on-site are minimal.
