Mount Bolshoye Bogdo

Bolshoye Bogdo rises 149 metres above a plain that is itself below sea level, which makes it the only significant relief in the whole Caspian depression and visible from a great distance across flat salt steppe. It is being pushed up by the salt dome beneath it and is still rising a few millimetres a year. The rock is Triassic red sandstone and clay, weathered into hollows and cavities on the south-west face that the wind sounds through, which is the origin of stories about the mountain singing. Kalmyk Buddhist tradition holds it sacred, and it is said to have been consecrated by a lama; offerings are still left. The fossils in its Triassic beds were among the first described from the region. It is inside a strict reserve, so the ascent is on a marked boardwalk route with a guide, and leaving it is not permitted. Snakes, including vipers, are common.

When to go

April to May for steppe tulips and bearable temperatures; September also works. Two to four hours. Summer is extreme.

Honest expectations

Access is on a boardwalk with a guide and leaving the route is prohibited. Vipers are present and are a real hazard off the boardwalk. No shade and summer heat over forty degrees. Permits are needed from the reserve.
