Estonia in a week, coast to bog
A medieval capital, two national parks, a student town and the largest island, all inside a country the size of Denmark.
Estonia is small enough that a week covers it properly rather than superficially, and varied enough that the week does not repeat itself: a Hanseatic old town, a coast of manor houses and fishing villages, raised bogs you walk across on boardwalks, and an island that has been quietly doing its own thing for centuries. Distances are short, roads are good, and outside Tallinn in July you will have most of it to yourself.
The route, day by day
- Day 1-2 Tallinn Old Town
The best preserved medieval core on the Baltic, and small enough to walk in an afternoon.
- Day 2 Telliskivi Creative City
The old factory quarter behind the station - where the city actually spends its evenings.
- Day 3 Lahemaa National Park
An hour east: manor houses, boulder fields, fishing villages and forest down to the sea.
- Day 4 Tartu Old Town
The university town, and a completely different register from Tallinn.
- Day 5 Soomaa National Park
Bogs, beaver dams and the fifth season, when the rivers flood the forest and you paddle through it.
- Day 5 Viru Bog Trail
If Soomaa is too far, this boardwalk in Lahemaa gives you the same landscape in two hours.
- Day 6-7 Saaremaa
The big island. Windmills, a meteorite crater and a castle that still has its moat.

The best surviving medieval castle in the Baltics, and the reason to end on the island.

Getting around
A car makes this route; buses connect the towns well but not the parks. The Saaremaa ferry runs frequently and takes 30 minutes - book the car on in summer. Everything in this list is within three hours of Tallinn.
When to go
May to September. June has light until midnight and the bogs at their best. Winter has its own case - frozen bogs, ice roads to the islands when the ice is thick enough - but daylight is short and many rural places close.
Honest expectations
Tallinn old town in high season is dense with cruise passengers between ten and four, and prices inside the walls reflect that. Outside the capital, restaurants close early and choice is thin. Mosquitoes in the bogs in June and July are serious - repellent is not optional. The islands need a whole day each, not a morning.
