Lahemaa National Park

Lahemaa was the Soviet Union's first national park, founded in 1971, and it still feels like the most complete introduction to the Estonian landscape you can get in one day. Bogs, boulder fields, pine forest, a broken coastline of small peninsulas, fishing villages and grand manor houses, all packed into a park an hour east of Tallinn.

What you actually see

• Viru bog - a boardwalk loop across open bog with pools, stunted pines and an observation tower.
• Boulder fields - erratics dumped by the last glaciation, some the size of a small house, through forest and along the shore.
• The coast - shallow bays, reed beds and pine woods running down to stony beaches, with the fishing villages of Altja and Käsmu on it.
• The manor houses - Palmse and Sagadi restored with parks and museums, Vihula and Kolga completing the set in varying states.

When to go

Late spring through early autumn for hiking. October is the quiet favourite: the bog turns rust and gold, the mosquitoes are gone and the light is long and low. Winter is beautiful but many of the smaller facilities shut.

Honest expectations

Lahemaa is big and diffuse. Without a car you will see one or two corners of it, not the park. The Viru bog boardwalk is deservedly popular and can feel busy on summer weekends - go early or late and it empties out.

Mosquitoes and ticks are a real factor from June to August, particularly around the bogs and long grass. Cover up and check yourself afterwards.

Nearby

The coast road continues east towards Käsmu peninsula, which is worth its own half day, and the park is a natural first stop on any drive from Tallinn towards the Narva side of the country.
