Neamț Citadel

Cetatea Neamț was built at the end of the fourteenth century and strengthened under Stephen the Great, who added the outer wall with its round bastions and deepened the ditch, and it held out against a siege by Mehmed II in 1476. The approach is the memorable part: a wooden bridge carried on tall stone pillars crosses the ravine to the gate, so visitors arrive high above the ground with the walls rising ahead. Inside, restoration completed in 2009 has rebuilt roofs, floors and rooms, with the chapel, the council hall, the prison and the treasury furnished and interpreted, which makes it one of the few Romanian fortresses where the interior is legible rather than a shell. The citadel sits on a spur in oak forest above Târgu Neamț, and the view runs over the town and the monastic country beyond.

When to go

April to October. Winter opening is shorter and the approach path can be icy. Summer weekends are busy with families and school groups, and the medieval festival days fill the site entirely. Autumn colour on the spur is excellent.

Honest expectations

The 2009 restoration is thorough and the interiors are largely modern reconstruction, which some visitors find over-restored. The climb from town is steep, though a shuttle runs in season. Interpretation is mostly in Romanian. Costumed events can make it feel like a theme park on busy days.

Neamț, Agapia and Văratec monasteries lie in the hills around; the bison reserve is close.
