Ceahlău National Park

Ceahlău stands apart from the main Carpathian chain and is visible for enormous distances across Moldavia, which is much of the reason it carries the weight it does in local tradition: it has been called the region's holy mountain for centuries, and an annual pilgrimage still climbs it in August. Geologically it is conglomerate rather than limestone, and erosion has left the summit plateau ringed by freestanding towers with names attached to legends, chief among them Toaca peak and the pillar called Dochia. From the top the view runs over the Bicaz reservoir and, on clear days, far across the plains. The classic ascent from Durău takes most of a day and passes the Duruitoarea waterfall, which drops around twenty-five metres in two steps. A chalet on the plateau makes an overnight possible, and sunrise from Toaca, with mist filling the valleys below, is the reason people carry a sleeping bag up.

• Dochia pillar - the freestanding rock tower tied to the mountain's best-known legend.
• Duruitoarea waterfall - a two-step fall on the Durău ascent.
• The plateau chalets - simple huts on the summit shelf, used for sunrise nights.

When to go

June to October for clear trails; snow and ice make the upper sections serious from November into May. August brings the pilgrimage and full chalets. Weather changes fast on the plateau and cloud can swallow the summit within minutes at any time of year.

Honest expectations

The ascents are long and steep rather than technical, but they are proper mountain days with a thousand metres of climb. The plateau huts are basic and busy, and water on the summit is limited. Bears live in the forest belt and rubbish at the trailheads attracts them. The mountain closes to visitors during certain avalanche and fire-risk periods, so check before travelling.
