Tuli Block

Botswana's eastern corner of red rock and riverine forest - elephants among sandstone koppies, and walking and horseback safaris that other parks do not allow.

The Tuli Block runs along Botswana's eastern edge where the Limpopo and Shashe rivers meet, and it looks nothing like the delta or the pans: red sandstone outcrops, basalt ridges, mopane and huge riverine trees, all on private conservation land rather than a national park. That private status is the point for visitors, because it permits what most Botswana parks do not - guided walking safaris, horseback riding among game, and night drives. Elephants here are famous for moving among the rock formations, and the area holds leopard, eland and one of the country's better raptor populations.

What you actually see

  • Walking safaris - guided approaches on foot among big game.
  • Horseback riding - riding among elephant and antelope on open ground.
  • Sandstone koppies - the red rock landscape unique in Botswana.
  • Motloutse and Limpopo riverine forest - big trees and shaded game viewing.

When to go

The dry months from April to October concentrate game and bring comfortable temperatures. Summer from November is hot, green and good for birds, with occasional heavy rain making tracks difficult. Winter mornings on open vehicles are genuinely cold.

Honest expectations

Tuli is remote from Botswana's main circuit and most visitors arrive from South Africa's side, which means border-crossing logistics. Lodges are the practical option; independent camping is limited. Walking and riding safaris carry real risk and require following guide instructions precisely. Sightings are good but the density does not match Moremi or Chobe - the appeal is the landscape and the activities.

Nearby

The Motloutse ruins, the Limpopo confluence and crossings into South Africa and Zimbabwe.
