Măcin Mountains National Park
The worn granite stumps of one of Europe's oldest mountain ranges, rising as bald domes above the Dobrogean steppe.

The Măcin Mountains are what remains of a Hercynian range hundreds of millions of years old, ground down over that span to a set of rounded granite ridges and tors that top out at 467 metres. They look nothing like the Carpathians: the rock is bare and pale, the slopes are dry, and the vegetation is steppe and woodland-steppe rather than beech and fir. That combination makes the park one of the most biologically distinctive places in Romania, a meeting point of Balkan, Mediterranean and Asian steppe species, with rare plants, exceptional butterfly diversity, and birds including numerous raptors that use the ridges. Trails climb to the granite tors of Țuțuiatu, the high point, with views over the Danube floodplain and the Măcin quarries. It is a modest range in height and a remarkable one in content, visited by very few foreign travellers.
What you actually see
- Granite tors - bald weathered domes and blocks on the ridge crests.
- Steppe flora - feather grass, peonies in spring and rare endemics.
- Raptors - eagles, buzzards and falcons hunting along the ridges.
- Views over the Danube - the floodplain and river from the high points.
When to go
Spring, especially May, when the steppe flowers and the wild peonies bloom, and autumn for clear air and migration. Summer is hot and exposed with no shade or water, and midday walking is unpleasant. Winter is bleak and windy.
Honest expectations
Water is the constraint: there are effectively no sources on the ridges, and heat exhaustion is the real risk rather than any technical difficulty. Vipers are common in the rocky terrain. Trail marking is sparse and some paths cross private grazing land. There is very little tourist infrastructure in the villages around the park.
Nearby
The Danube Delta begins east; Brăila lies across the river to the west.
