Enisala Fortress

Enisala stands on a bare limestone ridge above the Razim lagoon, and the position explains it: from the walls you can see the water, the flat Dobrogean steppe and the routes across it, which is exactly what a fortress built in the late fourteenth century needed to watch. Its builders are debated, with Genoese, Byzantine and Wallachian involvement all argued, and it passed into Ottoman hands before being abandoned when the lagoon silted and the strategic value went. What remains is a compact enceinte with towers and a gate, unroofed and consolidated, standing alone on the hill with no village clutter around it. The hill itself is a protected steppe reserve with rare plants, and the light over the lagoon at either end of the day is the reason photographers come. When to go

April to October, with May best for the steppe flowers. Sunrise and sunset are the point here; midday flattens everything and there is no shade at all. Winter is bleak and windy but the fortress stays accessible.

What to expect

The fortress is a shell with no interior buildings and no interpretation to speak of, so the visit is short. The walk up from the parking area is steep and rocky. Wind on the hill is constant and often strong. Snakes and ticks are present in the grassland.
