The museum opened in 1936, founded on the fieldwork of the sociologist Dimitrie Gusti, whose teams had spent years surveying Romanian villages; rather than build replicas they dismantled real houses, churches, mills and workshops and rebuilt them on seventeen hectares beside the lake in northern Bucharest. The result is a walk through rural Romania by region: half-buried houses from the Danube plain, tall wooden gates and shingled churches from Maramureș, stone houses from the mountains, windmills from Dobrogea, all with their fences, wells and outbuildings. Interiors are furnished with the textiles, tools and painted furniture that came with them. It is the easiest way to understand the country's rural architecture without driving for a week, and it works particularly well before or after a trip into the villages themselves. Craft fairs and folk events run through the summer.
What you actually see
- Regional houses - dwellings from every historical province, furnished inside.
- Wooden churches - relocated timber churches with shingled roofs.
- Mills and workshops - watermills, windmills and craft buildings.
- Craft fairs - seasonal markets and demonstrations in the grounds.
When to go
April to October for the best of it; the site is outdoors and much of it closes or empties in winter, when opening hours shorten. Summer weekends bring events and crowds. Weekday mornings are quiet and the light in the lanes is good.
Honest expectations
Many houses are viewed through the doorway rather than entered, and some are closed with no staff nearby. Labelling is uneven in English. In midsummer the site is hot with limited shade. It is large, and doing it properly means a lot of walking on gravel paths.
Nearby
Herăstrău park adjoins; the Arch of Triumph and the Triumphal Way are minutes south.
