The extinct giant that built Reunion tops out at 3,069 metres - the Indian Ocean's highest point - and the ritual for claiming it is fixed: climb from Cilaos or Hell-Bourg to the Caverne Dufour hut, sleep briefly in blanket-stacked dormitories, then headlamp up the final scree in the 4am cold to reach the summit cairn before the sky performs. Sunrise from Piton des Neiges is the island's holy hour: the three cirques - Cilaos, Mafate, Salazie - filling with gold beneath you, the Piton de la Fournaise smoking on the horizon, and the ocean curving away silver on every side. Then the knees pay the descent's bill.

What you actually see

  • The summit sunrise - all three cirques igniting below.
  • The Caverne Dufour night - the hut ritual at 2,478 metres.
  • The headlamp climb - the scree cone in pre-dawn dark.
  • The Fournaise view - the active sibling smoking eastward.

When to go

May to November, the dry austral winter, gives the clearest dawns - and genuinely freezing summit temperatures; book the hut well ahead, as it is the bottleneck. Cloud claims the peak by mid-morning almost daily.

Honest expectations

The climb is long, steep and relentlessly rocky - 1,700 metres of ascent from Cilaos - and the summit cold shocks tropical packing; gloves and layers are not optional. The hut is basic and crowded: earplugs, cash and reserved bunks. Day-tripping it without the hut makes for a brutal, cloud-cheated slog.

Nearby

Cilaos' thermal town and lentil terraces, Hell-Bourg's Creole villas and the cirque trails.
