Cascade Niagara is on the Rivière Sainte-Suzanne a short way inland from the north coast, a fall of about thirty metres dropping in a broad curtain into a pool. The name is a local piece of optimism rather than a comparison that survives contact, but it is easy to reach, the pool below is used for swimming when conditions allow, and the surrounding basalt walls are impressive after heavy rain when the flow multiplies.

What you actually see

  • The fall - a broad curtain of about thirty metres into a pool.
  • The pool - the basin below, used for swimming when the river is low.
  • The basalt walls - the rock enclosing the fall and the pool.
  • The short access - a fall reached with almost no walking.

When to go

Strongest after rain, which on the windward north coast is frequent. The dry season from May to November reduces it. Weekends bring local crowds.

Honest expectations

The name sets expectations the fall cannot meet. Flow drops considerably in dry spells. The pool is unsupervised and the river rises fast after rain in the hills.

Nearby

Sainte-Suzanne is on the coast, and Saint-Denis is west.
