The botanical garden at Río Piedras belongs to the University of Puerto Rico and covers about three hundred acres on a former sugar plantation in the south of the city, with an orchid house holding several hundred species, a palm collection, a bamboo grove, a heliconia section and lily ponds. Paths wind through it and the traffic outside disappears within a couple of minutes of entering, which is the main thing it offers in a city this size.

When to go
December to April is the drier season and the most comfortable. Mornings are best before the heat and the afternoon rain. The garden closes on some weekdays.
Honest expectations
Maintenance is uneven and some sections are overgrown or closed. Hurricane damage has affected parts of the collection. Labelling is patchy.
