At Ródão the Tagus cuts through a ridge of hard quartzite, and the result is a narrow gate between two cliffs rising about a hundred and seventy metres from the water - the Portas, the doors. It is the most striking single feature on the Portuguese Tagus and it is a designated natural monument. The cliffs hold one of the larger inland griffon vulture colonies in Portugal, over a hundred pairs, along with Egyptian vultures, black storks, Bonelli's eagles and eagle owls, and the birds are visible circling on the thermals from viewpoints on both banks and from boats that run up the river from Vila Velha. On the ridge above the northern cliff stands the Castelo do Rei Wamba, a small ruined watchtower. Downstream the valley holds important Palaeolithic rock art at Ocreza, and the whole area is inside the Naturtejo geopark.

What you actually see

  • The gate - the Tagus squeezed between quartzite cliffs a hundred and seventy metres high.
  • The vultures - over a hundred pairs of griffons nesting on the walls.
  • The boat trips - river runs up to and through the gorge from Vila Velha.
  • The watchtower - the Castelo do Rei Wamba ruin on the ridge above.

When to go

February to June for nesting vultures and green landscape. Year-round for the gorge itself. Two to four hours. Boats run on a schedule - check ahead.

Honest expectations

Summer here is very hot with no shade at the viewpoints. Boat trips depend on river levels and demand, and do not run daily out of season. Binoculars matter for the birds. The nearby industrial paper mill is visible from some angles.

Nearby

Vila Velha de Ródão is the base; the Naturtejo geopark extends along the valley.
