Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

The gardens were laid out in the 1860s by the German landscape architect Émile David around a Crystal Palace built for an international exhibition, in imitation of London's. That building was demolished in 1951 and replaced by the Pavilhão Rosa Mota, a domed sports arena that Porto has never much liked and which was heavily remodelled in the 2020s, so the gardens are now the reason to come. They step down the hillside above the Douro in a series of enclosed themed spaces - the Jardim das Camélias, the Jardim dos Sentimentos, avenues of lime and chestnut, hedged rooms and fountains - with viewpoints at the western edge looking down the river towards the sea and across to Gaia. Peacocks roam freely and are the gardens' unofficial residents. There is a nineteenth-century library, a greenhouse and a municipal gallery on the grounds.

When to go

April to October; camellias flower from December to March. Two hours. Late afternoon for light on the river.

Good to know

The original Crystal Palace is long gone and the replacement is unloved. Steep paths between the terraces. The gardens have been affected by works on the pavilion. Peacocks are loud and will approach food.
