The garden beside the St Lawrence monastery in Sibenik was laid out in the medieval period and then lost: it was bombed in the Second World War, filled with rubble, and left as waste ground for over sixty years. It was excavated and restored in 2007 under Dragutin Kis, a Croatian landscape architect, who rebuilt it as a medieval monastic garden - a cross-shaped path plan with a fountain at the crossing, box hedging, and beds of medicinal and culinary herbs planted to what such a garden would have held. It is small, walled and quiet in the middle of a busy old town, with a cafe in one corner.
