St Mary of the Snows, Belec

From outside, St Mary of the Snows at Belec is an ordinary church of 1674 on a slope above a small village. Inside, every surface is worked: gilded altars, carved and painted figures, and frescoes by Ivan Ranger covering the vault and walls, with the whole executed in the 1740s as a single scheme rather than accumulated piecemeal. It is consistently described by Croatian art historians as the most complete and best preserved baroque interior in the country. The contrast between the exterior and what is behind the door is the point, and it is the reason the church appears in every survey of Croatian art despite standing in a village of a few hundred people.

Honest expectations

The church is normally locked and seeing it means contacting the parish in advance; arriving unannounced usually means looking at a door. There is no lighting scheme for visitors. The village has no services.
