The Orsic manor was built in the 1750s in the baroque style of the Zagorje nobility, and it now houses the Museum of Peasant Revolts, which is about what happened on this ground two centuries before it was built: in January and February 1573 the peasants of the Zagorje and the surrounding country rose against the landowner Franjo Tahy and the burdens imposed on them, were defeated at Stubicke Toplice within a fortnight, and their leader Matija Gubec was executed in Zagreb - by tradition crowned with hot iron, though the details in the sources are uncertain. Below the manor stands a large monument to the revolt by Antun Augustincic, unveiled in 1973.

What you actually see

  • A baroque manor of the 1750s - built by the Orsic family.
  • The museum of the 1573 revolt - the rising and its defeat in a fortnight.
  • Matija Gubec - the leader executed in Zagreb.
  • Augustincic's monument - unveiled below the manor in 1973.

When to go

April to October; the museum keeps shorter winter hours. Half a day.

Honest expectations

The museum's framing dates partly from the socialist period and reads that way in places. Labelling in English is limited. The manor interiors are museum spaces rather than furnished rooms.

Nearby

Veliki Tabor is west; Marija Bistrica is south-east.
