Livraria Lello has sold books on Rua das Carmelitas since 1906 behind a white neo-Gothic facade, and its interior remains the most theatrical bookshop room in Europe: a forked crimson staircase pours down the centre like something grown rather than built, carved wood rises in pinnacled shelving to a stucco ceiling, and the stained-glass skylight overhead carries the shop's motto, Decus in Labore - dignity in work. Fame arrived with the legend that the shop inspired J.K. Rowling during her Porto years; the author has denied ever visiting, but the queue outside long ago stopped caring. The shop answered the crush with paid entry - the ticket price deducts from any book purchased - and stocks its shelves with handsome editions and its own imprints, so the souvenir can honourably be literature itself.

Year-round; the first morning slot or the last of the evening thins the crowd to something workable. Porto's frequent rain makes it a natural shelter hour - so does everyone else's.

Honest expectations

It is beautiful and it is rammed - expect a slow shuffle and cameras everywhere, with serene empty-staircase photos achievable only at opening. Entry is ticketed even to look, though the fee converts to a book. Browse upstairs where the crowd thins.
