Ilhéu de Vila Franca

The Ilhéu de Vila Franca is the remnant of a small volcanic cone whose crater is now flooded and connected to the open sea through a narrow gap, so it forms an almost perfectly circular natural pool about 150 metres across, sheltered from swell, with the crater rim rising around it. It is a nature reserve, protected for its seabirds - Cory's shearwaters and terns nest on the rim - and swimming in the lagoon, long its summer draw, has been banned since 2025 for conservation; visits now go with certified local companies from Vila Franca do Campo, as guided nature walks. The cliffs on the outer side have hosted the Red Bull cliff diving series, from a platform on the rim. Numbers are limited and popular days book out.

History

Written documents first record the islet in 1537, and over time it held a fort, a port, vineyards and a whale lookout. Until 1982 one family owned it, holidaying there and making wine, and in 1983 the regional assembly made the islet and the surrounding waters down to 30 metres a nature reserve (Wikipedia, Vila Franca Islet).

June to September is the main season for boat trips. Half a day. Book ahead - places fill on good-weather days.

Before you go

Places are limited, so turning up without a booking often fails. No shade, no facilities beyond basic ones, and nothing sold on the islet. Swimming has not been allowed since 2025, so this is a nature walk, not a beach day. Boats do not run in swell. Nesting areas are closed and must be respected.
