Syquia Mansion

The Syquia Mansion is one of the grandest of Vigan's ancestral houses, built in the 1830s by the Syquia family, Chinese-mestizo merchants who were among the wealthiest in Ilocos, and it survives as a house museum rather than a restored shell - the furniture, portraits, chandeliers, ceramics and household goods are the family's own, accumulated over generations. Its second layer of interest is presidential: Alicia Syquia married Elpidio Quirino, who became president in 1948, and the house holds rooms and material connected to him, including the period of his administration and the family tragedy of 1945, when his wife and three of their children were killed during the battle for Manila. Guides take visitors through the rooms and tell both stories. It is a short walk from Calle Crisologo, and it is the best of Vigan's house museums for anyone who wants an interior rather than a facade.

Visits are guided and follow a fixed route - you do not wander freely. Photography rules vary by room. It is one hour, and the entrance fee is separate from other Vigan sites.
