Oslob Whale Sharks

At Tan-awan in Oslob, local former fishermen hand-feed small amounts of krill from outrigger boats each morning, and whale sharks - the world's largest fish, plankton feeders that pass through these waters - come in to take it. The result is the most dependable whale-shark encounter anywhere: numbers are high, the animals are metres away, and sightings are effectively guaranteed in a thirty-minute slot, which is why the site transformed the town's economy within a few years. It is also the most argued-about wildlife site in the Philippines. Researchers have documented that provisioning changes the sharks' movement and residency patterns and that boat strikes and contact with swimmers occur despite rules; supporters point to the collapse of local fishing pressure and to strict enforcement of distances, no-touch policies and sunscreen bans. Both bodies of evidence exist, and visitors are best served reading the marine-science literature and the municipality's own rules before deciding whether to go, rather than taking either side's summary. Non-provisioned alternatives operate seasonally at Donsol in Sorsogon and in Southern Leyte.

When to go

Sightings run year-round, with calmest seas from December to May. Sessions are early morning only and stop by late morning; arriving before dawn shortens the wait.
