The Cuartel at Oslob was begun in the 1860s as barracks for Spanish troops stationed on this stretch of the Cebu coast, built of coral stone in a long rectangular plan with arcaded openings, and it was never finished - work stopped and the shell was left, then burned during the revolutionary period, leaving the walls and arches standing open to the sky. What remains is a roofless colonnade on the seafront, grass inside, the sea a few metres away, next to the old Immaculate Conception church and a Spanish-era watchtower. It photographs well in late light and takes half an hour, which is exactly how it fits into the Oslob day - most visitors arrive for the whale sharks in the early morning and stop here afterwards along with Tumalog Falls. There is no interpretation beyond a marker, and the ruins are open and unfenced.

What you actually see

  • The roofless arcade - coral-stone arches open to the sky.
  • The seafront position - the ruin directly above the water.
  • The old church - Immaculate Conception alongside.
  • The watchtower - the Spanish-era lookout nearby.

When to go

December to May for dry travel. Late afternoon for light on the stone; the site is small and quick at any hour.

Honest expectations

It is an unfenced ruin with a marker and nothing else - no guides, no interpretation, no facilities. Half an hour is enough. It works as an add-on to the Oslob morning, not a destination.

Nearby

The whale-shark site at Tan-awan and Tumalog Falls are minutes away; Sumilon Island lies offshore.
