Cantona

Cantona may be the most under-visited great ruin in Mexico. Spread across a malpais lava flow at the dry eastern edge of the Puebla basin, the city flourished between roughly 600 and 1000 AD as a fortified metropolis controlling the obsidian trade from nearby Zaragoza - and it was built like nowhere else: no mortar, just fitted volcanic stone in millions of pieces, organized around more than 3,000 walled patios and an astonishing network of over 500 cobbled causeways, sunken streets engineered for control of movement through the maze. Archaeologists count 24 ballcourts - the most of any Mesoamerican site - several in unique acropolis ensembles where court, plaza and pyramid interlock. Only a fraction of the ten-plus square kilometres is open, and that fraction takes hours: causeway after causeway between cactus and yucca, plazas silent except for wind and hawks, with the white cone of Pico de Orizaba floating on the horizon. The modern site museum sets the context. On most weekdays, visitors can count fellow travelers on one hand.

When to go

Dry-season mornings - the mesa is shadeless and the walking long; winter light is knife-clear. Combine with the nearby Alchichica crater lake for a strong day.

Honest expectations

There are no crowds because there is nothing easy here: minimal services, no shade, considerable distances on uneven stone. Bring water, hat and fuel. Signage is decent but a guide multiplies the site.
