Tumalog Falls

Tumalog does not crash - it drifts. The stream comes over a wide mossy overhang and breaks into threads on the way down, so the fall arrives as a curtain of fine water and mist rather than a column, landing in a broad shallow pool with a rock floor. Around it the limestone is hung with ferns and dripping moss, and light coming through the spray in the morning is the reason photographers rate it above bigger falls elsewhere on Cebu. The pool is shallow enough to wade rather than swim, which suits families. Access is down a steep concrete track from the main highway - too steep for most vehicles, which is why habal-habal riders wait at the top and ferry people down for a small fare, or you walk about twenty minutes each way. It is almost always combined with the whale-shark trip at Oslob, ten minutes down the hill.

• The morning light - sun through the spray.

When to go

June to November for the fullest flow; the dry months reduce it to a thin veil but make the track easier. Mornings for the light and before tour vans arrive.

Honest expectations

Flow varies a lot - late in the dry season it can be sparse. The access track is very steep; habal-habal is the practical way down. The pool is shallow, not a swimming hole.
