Angono Art Village

Angono calls itself the art capital of the Philippines, and the claim rests on two men: Carlos "Botong" Francisco, the muralist whose sweeping historical panoramas defined a national visual style in the mid-twentieth century, and Lucio San Pedro, the composer, both National Artists and both from this town. Their houses and the galleries of the families and students who followed are scattered through Angono's streets - the Blanco Family Museum, showing the work of a household of painters across three generations, the Nemiranda Arthouse, the Botong Francisco house and murals in public buildings around the plaza. The town also holds something far older: the Angono-Binangonan petroglyphs, a rock shelter a short drive away carved with over a hundred figures dating to around 3000 BCE, the oldest known artwork in the Philippines. The Higantes festival in November parades enormous papier-mâché figures through the streets.

When to go

November to May for dry travel; the Higantes festival in late November is the town's big event. Galleries keep irregular hours - weekdays and calling ahead help.

Honest expectations

Galleries are family-run with variable opening hours; some require appointments. The petroglyph site is a separate trip with its own entry and is a shallow shelter, not a cave. Angono traffic is heavy at weekends.
