Aliwan Fiesta

Aliwan Fiesta was created in the 2000s as a national competition of competitions: the winning contingents from festivals across the Philippines - Sinulog from Cebu, Dinagyang from Iloilo, Kadayawan from Davao, Sandurot, Sinukwan, Pintados and dozens more - are brought to Manila to perform against each other on the bayfront, with a street-dancing competition, a float parade along Roxas Boulevard and a beauty pageant. For a visitor it is the most efficient way to see what the country's regional festivals look like without spending a year travelling to them, and the standard is high because these are the troupes that already won at home. The obvious limitation is that everything is out of context: the dances are performed on a Manila street rather than in the towns whose devotions and histories they carry, and the meaning thins accordingly. It is a showcase, and it does not pretend otherwise.

April or May - dates shift each year and the event has been suspended in some years, so confirm before planning around it.

Honest expectations

It is a showcase competition, not a festival in its own right - the performances are out of their home context. The bayfront is hot and exposed, and grandstand seats are limited.
