Panamarca

Panamarca is an adobe complex on a rocky outcrop in the Nepeña valley at the southern edge of Moche territory, built around 550 to 750 AD, and its importance is its paintings. Murals on plastered walls and columns show ceremonial processions, warriors, supernatural figures and narrative scenes, in red, yellow, white and black; some were recorded in the 1950s and then lost to weather, while excavation and conservation since 2010 has uncovered more, including painted pillars and a throne room associated with a female ruler, findings that received wide coverage in 2022 and 2024. Moche murals of this quality are rare and fragile - the pigment sits on mud plaster and rain destroys it - so exposed sections are covered and access to painted areas is controlled. The site is remote enough that arranging a visit through the archaeological project or a Chimbote operator is the practical route.

Year-round. One to two hours. Access to painted areas depends on conservation work and the field season - contact the project or a local operator before going.

Honest expectations

Murals are covered or closed much of the time for conservation, and you may see very little painting. The site is remote with no facilities or reliable staffing. Rough track access. Photography of painted surfaces is often restricted.
